Dr. Scott Nilsson

Background

Dr. Scott Nilsson grew up in North Eastern Pennsylvania and went to undergraduate school at Mansfield University where he majored in biology with a minor in chemistry. In 2000 he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where he performed pharmaceutical and genetic research for four years. He then returned to school at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) in Philadelphia to receive his Doctorate of Optometry where he graduated with academic and clinical honors. He began his career with a practice in Charlottesville Virginia before moving to the Hampton Roads area in 2009.

At the Practice

Dr. Nilsson joined Coastal Vision as an employee for several years before purchasing the practice with his other partners. He performed several rotations in Optometry school that had emphasis on ocular disease management. It was during these rotations that he initially learned the skills to medically manage patients with dry eye, diabetes, macular degeneration, and other issues of the eyes. It was during the last 10 years of treating patients in private practice that he has been able to hone these skills to properly manage any ocular problems you are having. While treatment is important, it also needs to be done in a manner that allows you to be comfortable and understand your diagnosis.

“That is why I strive to have every one of my patients feel like they now have a friend who is their eye care provider! It’s a great feeling when you know you were able to really make a difference in that person’s quality of life and they leave with a smile.”

Personal Life

Dr. Nilsson loves living in Hampton Roads and resides here with his wife Dr. Lin and their two young daughters. He enjoys spending time with them outdoors, and taking part in family fun like fishing. In his spare time, Dr. Nilsson enjoys staying fit and going to the gym. He also enjoys doing a couple of 5k mud runs every year.

“Everyone is super busy in today’s fast paced world but taking some time to stay fit and healthy pays off dividends. Even if it’s just 30 minutes a couple of times per week. Taking some time to exercise really helps to keep the stress levels down while helping you look and feel better the whole week.” “Set small goals a couple of months out and strive to reach them. You’ll be amazed at what you can do!”
