When we hear the term ‘focus’ we traditionally think of eyesight/ photography and the strategically blurry selfie posted to Instagram titled #wokeuplikethis. However focus can mean so much more when applied to health and fitness. Focus is not just what you look for in an eye exam; it’s something you give yourself when you begin your workouts.
When you walk into your gym let all of your problems, stressors, and responsibilities melt away and take that time to be selfish, focus on you! Make your workout time exactly that, YOUR time. When you add more focus to your workout, you add more intensity. This gives you a more effective workout in a shorter time, such as a fast paced interval workout vs. an hour of steady state cardio on a treadmill. The more intense version will yield quicker and longer lasting results while keeping your mind focused on the task at hand. It’s hard to distract yourself when you are constantly moving from a burpee to sprint to rope slam, that takes a lot of concentration!
The more focus you bring to your workout the shorter your rest times in between movements will be as well. This not only shortens your time inside the gym, it keeps your heart rate up and allows your body to function more efficiently. In a stressful situation we rarely have time to take breaks or call a timeout, so train for life!
In order to give your workout the focus needed preparation is key. Always walk in with a plan so that you don’t have to think twice about your workout progression. The easiest way to lose momentum in the gym is by finishing one movement, and not being sure of what comes next. Writing out your workout plan and keeping that with you is the easiest solution. This allows you to give all your focus to the workout as you are doing it, and leaves no room for distractions.
All of these tips are simple and easy to incorporate into the workout program you are already following. Bringing focus into your workout will allow you to reap the benefits here, as well as simply give you a break from everything that makes life harder. Focus isn’t just for your eyes, it’s for your full body health.
