There are certain things you can’t take your eyes off of: a tantalizing meal, a scary movie, or your favorite television show. However, there are certain things you should take your eyes off of. If not, they can do serious damage to the health of your eye. Check out these tips to keep your vision in the best shape possible.
Literally, take your eyes off of those bad boys. Not only will they destroy your health but they will ruin your eyesight. Cigarettes can lead to the development of cataracts at an early age. They can also lead to macular degeneration, or blind spots. Smoking can cause chronic dry eyes. You might find that your eyes become red and irritated constantly because of the cigarette smoke.
Even if you have previously tried, resolve to quit now. The earlier you quit the less of a chance you have of developing serious health issues. It’s never too late! Quit smoking and give your eyes the vision they deserve.
2. Electronic Screens
Whether a television, cell phone, laptop, or tablet, screens can damage your eyes if you stare at them for too long. When it comes to electronics, you don’t blink as often as you should. This causes your eyes to become dry and irritated. It can also lead to eye strain, headaches, and chronic neck and back pain.
While avoiding screens altogether may seem a little drastic, there are other things that you can do to protect your vision. Try to give your eyes a break every 30 minutes by focusing your vision on something far away for at least 30 seconds. Be sure to get up, leave the screen, and take a break for at least 10 minutes every couple of hours. Make sure to position yourself at least 12 inches away from your screen.
It’s also important to avoid any glares on your electronics that might cause more strain on your vision. Also, never use your electronic devices in a dark room; the contrast of light against darkness will cause serious strain on your eyes.
3. The Sun
This might seem like common sense, but it’s an important tip nonetheless. Looking directly at bright lights and the sun will destroy your vision quickly. Even if you aren’t planning on gazing straight into the noon-day sun, protecting your eyes is still critical.
Make sure to wear sunglasses whenever you are outside. Choose glasses that are able to block between 99-100% of UV rays. Also, opt for polarized lenses. They are specifically designed to help dim glare coming off of water, cars, or windows. Protecting your eyes while outside will help your vision stay clear for years to come.
4. Junk Food
Opt for a healthy diet and an active lifestyle. If your body isn’t healthy, chances are your vision will also suffer. Eat fish, leafy greens, and plenty of fruits and veggies. Antioxidants and Omega 3s have been shown to slow down the process of eye degeneration. Eat a healthy diet and exercise. Choose a multivitamin that boosts the health of your eyes and take them daily.
5. Anything that’s Keeping You from Sleeping!
If you find yourself developing headaches or blurry vision consistently, take a look at your sleeping habits. If you aren’t getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night, your eyes will be the first things to go. Sleep deprivation can lead to eye spasms, dry eyes, and headaches. Without sleep, your eyes are unable to function at their fullest potential. Whatever is distracting you, put it away and make your sleep a priority.
