Tips to Healthy Vision

healthy visionThrough our eyes, we experience life. We can see sunsets, flowers, delicious food, and even a baby’s first smile. Why would we ever risk that? Here at Coastal Vision, we understand just how important your vision is. For that reason, we have made eye care our number one priority. While it is important to come in and see us for your yearly checkup, there is plenty more you can do at home to take care of your vision.

First and foremost, protecting our eyes in all situations is extremely important. Here in Virginia Beach, we are lucky enough to be near the sunny coastline. However, that sun can be damaging to our eyes if they aren’t protected. Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion accessory; they shield our eyes from harmful UV rays. Also, keep your eyes protected in the workplace if needed. Don’t skip the goggles. Your eyes are worth it!

Next, get a good night’s sleep. This means at least 6-8 hours every night. If you don’t, your eyes will be the first things to complain. Headaches and blurred vision are just some of the symptoms that can accompany sleep deprivation.

Feeding your body the nutrients it needs is another excellent way to keep your vision healthy. Eating vegetables, specifically leafy greens and carrots, will not only boost our energy but add to the overall health of our eyes. Also, keep taking those multivitamins. Vitamins A, C, and E and Omega 3s have all been shown to help prevent eye problems associating with aging. If you have a habit of smoking, make the goal to quit now. Smoking has been directly related to nerve damage in the eye and cataracts.

Lastly, limit the amount of time spent in front of screens. Sitting in front of a screen for more than 30 minutes at a time can add a lot of strain on your eyes. Take a break; even if it’s just looking away from your computer for a minute. It will allow your eyes to focus on something different and give them a rest.

While your vision may seem fine now, apply the above advice to ensure it stays that way. You never know what beautiful sights life may bring you. Making your eyes' health a priority will ensure you never miss a minute of it!
