November is American Diabetes Awareness month. All this month we'll be posting information about this very common disease. If you know someone with diabetes please share these posts with them and help us increase awareness.
A recent study published in the journal, Neurology, suggests that diabetes may be associated with developing many types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. The study looked at a group of patients with diabetes and group of patients without diabetes. They monitored these patients over a period of 15 years. The rate of dementia development in the diabetic group was 35% higher compared to the group without diabetes.
The authors of the study suggested that Diabetes should be considered a risk factor for the development of dementia. They also suggested that the reduction of blood sugar in diabetics is "critical to prevent future dementia."
